“Our almonds are supplied by a company called Purity Organics. The harvest was over when we arrived but we were given a tour of the orchards. We were amazed to learn that the almonds are harvested by machines which shake the trunk of the tree. This causes the almonds to drop down and the machine can collect them. We stood nearby one of these machines and were shocked by how strongly the tree shook. We were told this is only done for a few seconds though so that the tree is not damaged. In the past the trees used to be hit with a hammer, so a brief shake is probably much better for the trees!”
